Class C Commercial Driver's License
The commercial driver's license (CDL) offers a diverse selection of vehicles and trucking jobs. This is among the most flexible CDLs. It can be used for anything from recreational vehicles and buses to passenger vehicles, and even hazardous transportation vehicles.
Straight trucks can be driven or box trucks dump trucks, buses that can carry 16 or more passengers including the driver.
Passenger Vehicles
New York drivers can choose from a wide range of classes. The classes are designed to accommodate different driving styles and types. Understanding the different classes is essential, whether you're planning to drive down Broadway in your parents 1986 Toyota Corolla, or pilot an oversized truck through the Adirondacks.
If you are looking to drive passenger vehicles, such as sedans and station wagons, the class C non-CDL license is the best choice. It allows you to drive single vehicles with capacity of up to 26,001 pounds. You can also tow vehicles up to a maximum trailer load of 10,000 pounds. Drivers can add endorsements to their class C license to gain increased possibilities for employment. These additional endorsements can include passengers (P) tanks (T) or hazardous materials (H). These endorsements are typically added by passing additional knowledge tests and specific skill tests.
The maximum number of passengers that can be transported in a vehicle for passengers with a class C non CDL license is 16, including the driver. Drivers are also required to limit number of underage passengers they carry to one, unless the passengers being transported are immediate family members or are over 18. Teen drivers who hold a driver's license class C and are younger than 18 years old must always have a parent in the vehicle.

For those looking to drive of mopeds or motorcycles, a class M driver's license is available. This is only available to junior drivers, and it is only valid in New York. New York teens are required to complete a program of training and log practice time before they are able to obtain their class M license. Combination Vehicles

Towing Vehicles
A category C+E license is the most complete HGV license you can obtain which allows drivers to operate the widest range of large vehicles. This allows drivers to drive articulated vehicles like lorries, coaches and drawbar vehicles known as artic or tipper trucks.
In addition to passenger cars and trucks drivers who have an ACC license can operate small commercial vehicles like dump trucks, vans and straight or box trucks. If they have the appropriate endorsements, they may also operate buses that hold more than 16 people for hire, as well as vehicles that transport dangerous materials.
Tow truck operators are a different group of drivers who need a category C license. They typically operate tow trucks with a GVWR of less than 26,001 pounds. They can tow other vehicles provided the vehicle to be towed has a GVWR less than or equal to the tow truck.
If the tow vehicle is greater than 26,001 pounds of GVWR or the driver is planning to transport hazardous materials or passengers, they will need to have an additional level CDL. There are two levels for tow truck operators licenses which are level 1 and 2. They must pass a written and practical test, as well as an assessment of their driving skills. This is an additional requirement that can be added to a category C licence. Some employers require drivers to hold the T licence for certain positions. Hazardous Materials
A Class C commercial driver's license is required to operate any vehicle designed to carry more than 16 passengers including the driver. HazMat vehicles are included in this category as well. This category includes trucks with rated tank, as passengers vans as well as smaller HAZMAT vehicles. The holder of a class C CDL must have a tank endorsement, and he or she may be required to pass the hazard material test.

The DOT has set specific rules for the transportation of hazardous materials. These rules include requirements for shipping papers, labels placards, labels and many other subjects. Any driver who does not follow these rules could be charged with a DOT violation, which could result in fines and penalties.
